Akira "Dare" T-shirt
GOOD FOR HEALTH, BAD FOR EDUCATION.
"Akira," a pioneering Japanese anime film by Katsuhiro Otomo, revolutionized the anime industry with its mature themes, complex narrative, and visual innovation. Its influence extends across various media, setting new standards in animation and reshaping the global perception of anime as a sophisticated art form that continues to inspire creators worldwide.
We created the concept to coincide with the influence in both the manga and the anime displaying what drugs have in the characters' everyday lives. During this time in the 80s, the US had to grapple with the introduction and inevitable epidemic of crack cocaine, not to mention everything else the youth could get access to. The answer from the out-of-touch Reagan administration was not to create outreach but to set forth a campaign of total abstinence (D.A.R.E). We thought it a fitting mash-up and resonated to a time and place when both these new drugs and this seminal film dropped on culture like the bomb does in the first opening scene.

*This will be a contingent situation of either being printed via DTF (direct-to-film transfer) or discharge ink. If we get enough orders in to merit the cost of running a standard screen print production on these, we will run them as such. We want to make these available either way but don't want to eat the cost at the same time. So please share this with friends and foes alike so we can get enough in to do a regular run!
